A centre-slit golf towel has a reinforced opening at the midpoint of the towel length that loops through the neck of a club in your bag, the bag's fabric handle loop, or a top-of-bag anchor point. With the towel threaded through the slit, both halves hang on either side of the anchor, giving you two independent sections without a clip or magnet. One half stays damp for cleaning, the other stays dry. The centre-slit is the format used on tour because it provides more usable surface and more secure attachment than clip-based alternatives.
How the Centre-Slit Method Works
Pull one end of the towel through the opening at the centre. Feed it through fully until the slit sits at the anchor point: the neck of an alignment stick, a club handle, or the bag's fabric loop just below the carry handle. Once the towel is through, both halves hang either side of the anchor under their own weight. The slit holds the towel in place without a separate clip or mechanism.
This is sometimes called a lark's head attachment: the towel forms a loop around the anchor point, and the weight of both sections holds the loop closed. The more weight the towel carries (particularly when wet), the tighter the loop holds. It does not loosen or slip mid-round without manual adjustment.
The reinforcement around the slit matters for longevity. An unreinforced cut through the towel fabric will tear over time under the repeated stress of insertion, removal, and the weight of a wet towel hanging across 18 holes. Drape-Over vs Drape-Through: What Is the Difference?
Drape-over means the towel rests over the top of your bag or bag frame, with the slit sitting on the frame edge and both halves hanging down either side of the bag exterior. This is the quickest method and works on any bag, but the towel can shift if the bag is moved quickly.
Drape-through means the towel threads through two or three club necks near the top of the bag, with the slit sitting between the clubs and both halves hanging through the club tops. The clubs hold the slit in place from both sides, making this the more secure option on a walking bag where the bag moves with every step.

Why No Clip Is an Advantage
A carabiner or D-ring clip is a single attachment point. The towel hangs from one end, which means the lower end can drag and pick up debris from ground contact on a walking bag. On a carry bag, a low clip point positions most of the towel below the bag midpoint.
The centre-slit positions the attachment at the towel's midpoint. Both halves hang symmetrically from the anchor, keeping the entire length of the towel above ground level and accessible from either end without reaching past the clip.
The centre-slit eliminates the single-point problem. Both halves of the towel hang free, both are accessible from any angle, and neither end drags below the bag.
The Wet and Dry Zone System
With both halves hanging independently, the centre-slit naturally creates the wet and dry zone setup required for effective on-course cleaning. Before the round, wet one hanging half thoroughly. Leave the other dry. Clean clubs with the wet half after every shot. Dry the face with the dry half before returning the club to the bag.
The two-zone system works because the halves do not share a contact point until you use them together. The dry zone stays dry because you only reach for it at the finishing stage, not for first-pass cleaning.

The centre-slit method works on any bag with:
- A fabric loop or reinforced tab at the top of the bag (present on most stand, cart, and tour bags)
- Accessible club necks near the top of the bag (present on every bag)
- A carry handle positioned above the main compartment (present on all modern bag designs)
