A clip golf towel uses a carabiner or metal clip attached to the towel, which threads through a bag D-ring, handle loop, or bag strap. The clip holds the towel in place. To use the towel, you lift it free of the clip or leave it attached and work with one hand.
The magnet grade matters significantly in practice. N52 is the strongest commercially available grade of neodymium magnet, rated at 52 MGOe. Holding Power: How Secure Is Each Method?
In calm to moderate conditions, a quality N52 magnet holds as securely as a carabiner clip. The difference appears in two specific situations.
First, very strong wind. A magnetic towel can swing free if a gust catches the full face of the towel on a lightweight frame. A carabiner threaded through a D-ring stays fixed regardless of wind because the ring constrains the clip physically.
Second, non-ferrous surfaces. Magnets do not attach to aluminium, plastic, or fabric bag frames. If your bag has no steel components within reach, the magnet has nothing to dock against. A carabiner clip works on any loop, ring, or strap regardless of material.
A quality N52 Neodymium magnet holds a wet 400GSM towel through 18 holes of walking without slipping. The only conditions where a clip is more secure are sustained high winds or bags with no accessible steel surface.
Access and Convenience on the Course
This is where magnetic attachment has a clear advantage. You pull the towel away from the bag in one motion and dock it back in one motion. No threading a clip, no fumbling with a carabiner gate, no readjusting after use. Over 18 holes, reaching for your towel after every iron shot becomes a quick, unthinking action.
With a clip towel, the towel swings freely from the attachment point. On a walking bag, it can drag and pick up debris if the clip point is low. On a trolley, it can swing into the bag side and stay damp from contact. Position matters more with a clip-attached towel than with a magnetic one.
What Happens in Wet Conditions?
A wet 400GSM towel is heavier than a dry one. The additional weight increases the shear load on the magnetic attachment point. At N52, this load is within the magnet's holding capacity on most steel bag frames and buggy rails. On a walking bag in heavy rain, the towel picks up more moisture and gets heavier as the round progresses: N52 handles this, lower-grade magnets may not.
For a clip towel, wet conditions do not affect the clip mechanism itself, but a saturated towel dripping from a low clip point can be harder to manage mid-round.
